Charlie, holding sippy cup out to Mike: Omah! Omah!
Mike: *looks puzzled*
Charlie: Omah! Omah!
Me: He's saying "Open, open."
Mike: Oh, okay, Daniel Jackson.

Here's a vid of Charlie practicing some of his words with me (and playing binky-toes). My favorite is how he says "Charlie" so it sounds like "Car key."

Charlie is learning new words at a pretty good pace, now that he's kind of figured out what words are for.  Some of his vocab comes from day care--either the teachers or his friends, I guess--so it's always kind of a hoot when he trots out something new that didn't come from us.  Today's surprise word is "help."

Me: Ok, here's a choo-choo video*
Charlie:  Noooo!
Me: You don't like this one today? Ok, let's pick a different one. (start scrolling through other videos)
Charlie: Nooo, nooo, choo choo!
Me: I'm going as fast as I can, hang on, I'm going to put on a choo-choo, promise!
Charlie (yelling to Mike, in the other room): HELP! HELP!

*Go to youtube, search for "railfan," and be boggled by the number of choo-choo videos.  Charlie gets 3 a night. He gets to veto a couple of choices since he generally has a specific one in mind that he wants to start with, and can't say which one it is.  So we spend some time guessing.

Charlie is making reasonable progress with talking, after not bothering for most of his young life. He's in the 2-year-old room at day care now, so there is a lot more talking in general, and we're seeing that reflected at home.  He's also starting to enjoy playing around with vocalizations. He understands complex stuff like "can you go in the kitchen and put that on the counter?" but doesn't make sentences himself yet.

Here are the words he's saying so far, not counting random attempts to repeat words said by mommy and daddy, and the fairly complex not-really-words sentences he tosses around from time to time.

choo-choo
ba-ba (meaning bottle. He said it normally for a while; now he says it in a funny gravelly voice and laughs)
mommy
da-da
meow
arf
bye
hi
no
yeah
okay
uh-huh
something that sounds like pickle pickle pickle
bubble
outside
hot dog
grandma
juice
rawr (noise made by toy lions, tigers, and dinosaurs)
tay-tay (nickname of a classmate)
yay!
thank you
