Charlie is making reasonable progress with talking, after not bothering for most of his young life. He's in the 2-year-old room at day care now, so there is a lot more talking in general, and we're seeing that reflected at home.  He's also starting to enjoy playing around with vocalizations. He understands complex stuff like "can you go in the kitchen and put that on the counter?" but doesn't make sentences himself yet.

Here are the words he's saying so far, not counting random attempts to repeat words said by mommy and daddy, and the fairly complex not-really-words sentences he tosses around from time to time.

choo-choo
ba-ba (meaning bottle. He said it normally for a while; now he says it in a funny gravelly voice and laughs)
mommy
da-da
meow
arf
bye
hi
no
yeah
okay
uh-huh
something that sounds like pickle pickle pickle
bubble
outside
hot dog
grandma
juice
rawr (noise made by toy lions, tigers, and dinosaurs)
tay-tay (nickname of a classmate)
yay!
thank you

I love the different ways kids vocalize dogs' barks; SteelyKid uses "oooo-oooo-oooo."

Also, SteelyKid also used to do a straight "bottle" and all of a sudden the second syllable turned into "wah". What is up with this?

I blame all changes in vocab, as well as behavioral anomalies, on day care. In fact I can manage to blame just about anything on day care...so convenient!

In our family "ooo-ooo" appears to be a monkey noise, but Charlie doesn't have that one yet. His 3-yr-old cousin Z says it a lot though, because he is crazy about his toy monkey, so we expect C to pick that up soon.

"Eee-eee-eee" is our monkey noise, picked up from our renditions of _Where's Spot_. =>

"Thank you" is a great one to have early. And "pickle pickle pickle" is so cute. I'll bet he's happy to be able to express himself, too!

rawr!

Yup. Soft delay only. This is a perfectly typical list, just later! I'm surprised he doesn't have "shoes" yet.

:)
I like to imagine him with all the cool dinosaurs and tigers, going RAWR!
You could probably write a pretty decent little easy reader story using just that list of words. Well, and a few helpers tossed in.

I remember when I was a little kid there were words that I said properly and then learned to say differently from the kids around me - said spaghetti first and then psgetti, and like that.
