Later in same phone convo (see earlier post for part 1), after topic roved around a bit:

Dad: The problem is you think too much about commutative justice, instead of social justice.

Me: bwuh? What's commutative justice?

Dad: Justice means people receiving what's [morally] due to them.   Commutative justice is about making sure the individual receives what's due to them. Social justice is about changing institutions so that everyone receives what's due to them.

Me: ah, I get it. Yeah, I don't really do much about social justice, other than blogging some about it; I need to think about that. I do give to charity...

Dad: But charity is not justice.

Phone convo today:

Me: I feel weird about hiring people to clean my house. I feel like I should be doing it myself.   I know, First World Problems, right?

Dad: Well, sort of. If you're a well-paid computer engineer in a third-world country, you also hire someone to clean your house, but you don't feel weird about it.
