Despite the fact that divisions within Islam lead to widely-discussed civil wars and stuff, some people persist in thinking Muslims are a monolith.  Wikipedia has a pretty nice rundown right here of how diverse the Ummah really is.

Also there are good articles on the Pillars of Islam: Five, Seven.

It's very comforting for people to think about the unknown in this way. Stupid, counter-productive, and harmful, but comforting.

Can I also recommend Abd' al-Haqq's highly dense but unglamorous page on Islam (http://www.uga.edu/islam/)? Seriously, it's packed.

There are a plethora of resources on it; as a personal thing, he's one of the people I know that I most highly respect (FTR, he's a Naqshbandi Sufi -- he and his wife are the folks who host the local zikrs) and he's also pretty widely respected as a scholar.
