marydell: My hand holding a medusa head sculpture (by me) that's missing its snakes (Default)

I'm reading a fancy journal article about the use of prosthetics by kids with upper-limb deficiencies.  Upper-limb amputations are labeled according to where the limb ends--what Charlie has is an elbow disarticulation, ED for short.  Most kids with congenital upper limb amputations have a below-elbow disarticulation, or BED, so that is the focus of the article.

So one of the big headings in the article says "DO PROSTHESES HELP FUNCTION IN BED?"

Snerk

One has to wonder whether someone made those acronyms on purpose, just so people could snerk at titles like that. I mean, physicists deliberately named subatomic particles after odd things.

But now, if I should see an advertisement for ED I will no longer be stuck thinking of erectile dysfunction, for elbow disarticulation is much more fun.

It also stands for Eating Disorder, so it's three kinds of fun! Or, um, three kinds of absence of fun.

It's not available freely online, but I have a pdf I can email you if you PM me your email addy. I'll also be doing a post within the next couple of days with some links and a summary of everything I've been reading lately about prosthetics. The nutshell version - a large percentage of kids with congenital upper limb differences reject their prosthetics, mainly because the prosthetics don't actually add functionality in everyday tasks.

great, I will PM you. And I have heard the same thing to be true about people with upper limb differences.

I have never heard those abbreviations before...We use LBE (left below elbow) for Gavin and Charlie would be LAE (left above elbow).

It's probably different in different countries. Charlie wouldn't be above-elbow because he has his full humerus, and a tiny bit of bone below that but no joint. So they class it as "at the elbow" = elbow disarticulation in local nomenclature.

LOL! this is true. I suppose that explains why they only make the various specialized not-really-hand thingies for adults.
