Charlie has discovered pockets and he understands how they work.

We learned about his discovery when a bedraggled and broken wooden train car, property of his day care, emerged from the washing machine after his laundry was finished.  D'oh!

Eh, I had to barter trades with the day care, because mine got irretrievably attached to a couple of their toys -- one a very appealing rag doll in witch costume we encouraged her to name "Valerie," once we'd cleared the trade.

I got a set of 3 new train cars to drop off with his teacher, on the assumption that this won't be the last time he absconds with one.

I just have images of the things I will be finding in years to come, now that we have arrived at the "always check all the pockets before putting anything in the laundry" stage of his life. Live frogs, random keys to unknown things, firecrackers...snips, snails, etc.

Oh, pockets, oh, sigh.

I could build a whole new province with the sand she used to bring home in hers—deliberately, I might add; I've seen her fill her pockets in the sandbox. And shells, which are always in the sand here! And small rocks! And little broken bits of plastic off the playground!

And each one is a long-lost treasure that Cannot Be Thrown Out.

It got better at about age 5.

On tonight's news: Netherlands toddlers vacation in other countries, returning with pockets full of smuggled topsoil. Government denies "secret plan to combat rising sea levels".
