Stuff what's been going on with me & mine:

1. Charlie's asthma may be at least partly caused by reflux or esophagitis; ditto the coughing and vomiting. He has been on prevacid for a week and is having an endoscopy on Thursday (argh eek yikes), and is feeling much better from what we can tell so far.

2. Charlie's developmental assessment that we scheduled three months in advance has been rescheduled on us, to sooner, which would be good except instead of being at 9 am it's at 1 pm, AKA naptime. Getting a different appointment=3 more months so we're taking this one. Oh also it's tomorrow, the day before the endoscopy, greeeeeaaaaat. On the plus side we met the doctor in the hall during our (unrelated, but at same facility) GI appointment and I like him so far. With doctors, having a curiosity-provoking kid is convenient--this time we got a free driveby mini assessment.

3. When I get into a "eat healthier" mood one thing I do is eat more beans and less meat. This weekend I had a lovely meal of black beans, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and chips, and then spent the evening wondering why I felt sick in exactly the way that eating soy makes me feel sick. This is because I am a dumbass, and black beans are a close relative of soy, DUMBASS SELF. So now I am sort of trying to map out the legume family, since I have tested allergic to soy and not-allergic to peanuts, and have not been tested for anything in between. Fun! I guess for now this gives me an excuse to eat more steak.

4. What is up with this business of ceasing to be a baby and becoming a little boy? Noooooooooo!!! IMG_9992

wtf
someone stole your baby
ah, well
s/he left a handsome young man in his place. Probably best not to get all worked up about it.

PS the black bean story is VERY upsetting! What on earth is left for you? gah

Yeah, I'm enjoying the little boy at the same time as I'm pouting over the stolen baby.

The beans thing isn't too bad, because I can eat cheese and milk type things, which were previously forbidden. So it's a fair trade. Also soy lecithin turns out to be okay (b/c no protein) so I can have candy bars! And I seem to tolerate diet coke despite the various no-no ingredients, as long as I don't totally hook it straight up to a kidney. Basically as long as it's shitty and full of chemicals it's apparently okay. Also chicken, endless chicken.

Oh my god.

Oh my god.

Canned black beans are usually okay for me, but I made some from dried several months ago and ended up with a migraine that I couldn't figure out whence it came.

I bet that's it. Maybe something about the processing breaks them down enough that they usually fly under the radar for me.

...What about lima beans? Are they closely related?

No more baby! Look at the big boy!

Boo on the black beans, yay for being able to eat soy lecithin!

(I have now used up my weekly allotment of exclamation points.)

This is the bittersweet part of parenting--every time you say hello to a wonderful new stage you have to say goodbye to the old one.

He may do just fine with the endoscopy if no one tells him it's scary! My own experience with it was that's it's kind of weird but interesting, and a kid may find it so, too. Good luck!

He's looking good!

Endoscopy: urggh. My condolences. OTOH, I don't recall mine, since they gave me twilight sedation and I hallucinated the whole time. May it go well!!!

All three beans are part of the same family (faboceae), subfamily(faboideae), and tribe (Phaseoleae). Black beans and lima beans are both part of one sub-tribe (phaseolinae), while soy beans are in a different sub-tribe (glycininae). The soybean-containing subtribe doesnt seem to have much else edible in it, while phaseolinae comprises a whole lot of kinds of beans.

Peanuts, licorice, and lentils are all in the family but not in the same tribe. Based on me being allergic to soy but not to peanut, I guess I will experimentally eliminate anything in the phaseoleae tribe but keep eating stuff outside it.

For any plant you put into wikipedia, the botanical family stuff is listed under the picture at the top right of the entry. thank God! That was how I was able to successfully map Charlie's food allergies, when the entire rose family (apples-pears-peaches-etc) was setting him off.
