Here is the official Fisher-Price toddler playing with the Fisher-Price musical table:

...and here is my toddler playing with it.

Getting him to start standing up (something he just started doing regularly) would have been a bit easier if one or two of the "stand to play" toys required him to, ya know, stand up.

The train-and-cars table has been more successful in that regard, because he can't reach the interesting stuff without getting up onto his feet....

...but he immediately figured out that a table is just a higher sort of floor. Whee, floor play!
IMGP0407

We've now put an obstructionist train track on top, which gets in the way of climbing. The result thus far is more standing, a couple of tentative steps, and the eventual throwing cars onto the floor so he can get down and play with them properly.

whoa. is he as tall as he looks like he is? i mean, for his age? i'd buy him a basketball and ship it to you, but my dad is 6'6" and has only recently mastered walking and chewing gum simultaneously, so i know for a fact that height and basketball playing ability do not necessarily go together.

whoa!

He is insanely tall. He has been off the chart for height since he was about 4 months old. When he was measured a couple of months ago he was 33 inches. (He's 15 months now). It's a challenge to find things that are developmentally appropriate for him but also big enough for him - like, he outgrew his first baby bathtub and infant car seat before he learned to sit up. Fortunately they are starting to make things for bigger infants, but since he was only 6 pounds 14 oz at birth we didn't imagine he would be such a moose!

As for basketball, the company that makes his prosthetic arm has this cool hand-substitute for adults:

We're planning to put him in soccer as his main kid sport, but everyone around here has a basketball hoop and once he learns to frickin' walk we'll probably be putting one up for him. I have looked at those little-tikes toddler basketball hoops but I'm pretty sure he's already too tall for them.

Geez. SteelyKid was 30.5" a month ago and I thought _she_ looked huge? Wow.

Oh, and she likes her basketball hoop, but mostly to carry around. Seriously.

SteelyKid IS huge! 30.5 is pretty tall. I love the pics with Appa.

I'll have to take a pic of C on the changing table, since that's kind of a universal baby measurement.

tired of looking at cute pictures? Wha? Does not compute.

It looks to me as if Sample!Toddler is kneeling, too, but it's hard to tell since his legs aren't visible.

Well, it doesn't help that the Official Fisher-Price Toddler has no legs!

And he really looks like he's having fun with his train table, especially in the last two pictures (lookit that grin!)

Wow! Cassie didn't have that toddler table, but I don't remember her towering over the one she has, and she's always been really tall too. What a big guy!

That train table is excellent. I wish we had the room for one. :D

Yay for trains. The look of total engagement on Charlie's face as he plays with the yellow construction vehicle thing is full of awesome.

Thinking about adjusting for extra-tall height - You could get fun things to smack that go on walls, maybe? Those would be easy to adjust for height. At the kid's museum they had light up or noise things that you hit on the wall, and they seemed to absorb all the toddler types pretty well. Like big buttons, when pressed they made a noise or something.

Wow, he is tall!

Have you gotten an Official Doctor Verdict on whether his delays in standing up are connected to his non-standard arm configuration? It seems to me that most of the kids I know do a lot of pulling themselves up with both arms simultaneously, which I imagine presents an added challenge for Charlie.

Yes, his gross motor skills are about 3 months behind because of the absent arm - everything from rolling over to sitting to standing is hand & arm dependent. The whole first set of skills builds on pushing up from a face-down position, and then the standing skills build on pulling up.

Now that we're actually starting to make progress on the main skills, I'm going to write up one of those big developmental-milestone post thingies. I didn't have the heart for it before, when we were too focused on his health to have time for therapy.

Wow! He's about the size of a three-year-old, isn't he?

And he obviously loves those trains.
