Socks

So the weekend has ended up about as crappy as it started, with no artistic or writing activity occurring anywhere within it*.  However, I have managed to avoid getting vomited on**, which is an unexpected triumph, considering the inclinations of my clingy sick toddler, and I have purchased three pairs of deliciously exuberant socks, as a sort of countermeasure against the crappyness.

*although I seem to have memorized a baby einstein tub book about water, because of having read it so many times.  It features an octopus.  Water, water, everywhere! Water near and far! Let's use our hands and feet to count how many kinds there are!  Great vast oceans, tiny tears, soft clouds wet with rain, bubbles blowing, bursting, *pop!* [YAY! clap clap], a wondrous wet refrain! Waterfalls with misty breath twinkle as they flow, something something something something, and flakes form out of snow***. Something meadows sparkle bright with early morning dew; there's even water in your bath, splashing over you! [YAY! clap clap, wave book at mommy and say "nnn!" until she reads it again].

**I am inviting trouble by saying this before midnight, I know...

***snow is in fact made of flakes, not the other way around. I keep muttering this at the book, but it keeps being wrong.

Those are mighty fine socks. My bank account does not thank you for the information.

Hey, it's "Baby Einstein." Neither Einstein nor babies are known for their meteorological savvy.

Yay socks!

So which designs did you get?

Books that start out wrong tend to stay wrong, damn them, no matter how many times you turn the pages.

... however, that way 'round does rhyme. And that may be at least a partial point.

I got the Cassandra, (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YIHHBG/ref=oss_product) Petunia Pomme Soleil (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PMVN20/ref=oss_product), and the relatively subdued Temptation/charcoal (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PJ47KS/ref=oss_product).

If I like the feel of them, and they don't shrink horribly in the wash, I can see this becoming a financially dangerous habit...right now all of my socks are black, and all interchangeable. Practical but no fun.

Everyone should have at least one pair of purely fun socks.

And those look lovely. I can even see wearing that last pair at a dress up party, should you ever go to one.

I *still* know "Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs," "Barnyard Dance," "Jamberry," and "Goodnight Moon," by heart, along with selections from a Sesame Street word book called "Don't Forget the Oatmeal," from which we always used to read the butcher as Sean Connery.

Ooo, I will have to try Sean Connery voice.

Mercifully he doesn't love Barnyard Dance, so that's not entirely embedded...yet. That one is way too catchy.

We don't have "Jamberry," I'll have to go look that one up.

On an entirely unrelated front, thanks for the tip (from way back) about glutino pretzels--we tried them and Charlie totally loves them.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, Good Night, Moon and its ilk are more pleasant earworms than, say: "Major Tom" or Leonard Cohen's "Halleluah" (however that's spelled), both of which I've gotten stuck in my head for days and they were majorly depressing.

Would it help if you think of catchy kids' books as earworm vaccinations?

I work very hard to not memorize any of the kids' books. They, on the other hand, work on memorizing them assiduously. That way, when we make them read as part of their homeschooling, they can just recite them instead. We foil this by having them read and endless stream of library books. mwah ha ha ha!

But, yeah, I empathize with your book memorization pains. And rejoice that you have avoided baby puke! Avoiding puke and poop became one of my goals when I was working at the daycare. It's only occasionally a goal now, thank goodness. :)

I didn't entirely avoid the baby puke, since it did happen and there was cleanup, but none of it ended up on me. Small triumphs.

Memorizing the books makes it easier to read them upside-down, or while I do other stuff, as he gets better at turning the pages. Because seriously, he would make us read all day long if given the opportunity. I love that he loves books but we call him "the book tyrant" and have to hide them sometimes.

Peed on this morning, but no other bodily fluids.

SteelyKid's system apparently deeply traumatized by 1/2 teaspoon of humus on Friday night. What _was_ I thinking, to give her legumes?

Hoping for better things today. You, too.

He managed to pee around his diaper the other day, but mainly got his dad in the ensuing clothes drama. This was because we experimentally switched from pampers cruisers to pampers baby-dry diapers. Apparently they keep the baby dry by putting the pee into the clothes.

Hope SteelyKid is feeling better soon...winter is the pits for the little ones, sheesh.

"Green Eggs and Ham" is very difficult to memorize. Probably on purpose.

I realized about the time my youngest hit middle school that I could still recite "Dr. Seuss's ABC" from memory.

Careful with the voices; any interpretation the kid likes will swiftly become the One True Way. I am convinced that orthodoxy was invented by small children.
