As a straight cis woman, I believe it's a very fine thing that there is an award specifically for LGBT authors, and that the rules of the LLAs have been changed or clarified so that the identity of the author is a limiting factor, because that is how craploads of other small literary awards work.

I know a lot of my flist has been hearing the opposite of that this week, combined with a heap of hurtful things, so I just wanted to put that out there.

THIS.

i had the mildly surreal experience of being the only writer on a bandwagon post stating that a private LGBT organization had every right to change the rules to their contest and that LGBT folks should have their own literary prize. i'm thinking a certain segment of the lj m/m writing populace and their fans have lost their damn minds. eesh.

The only thing I'm not fine with is the impression I've gotten that they changed/clarified the rules AFTER this year's submission deadline. And since submitting for the award costs money -- if this is in fact what happened, I hope they're refunding the disqualified submissions, and it would have been better IMHO to make the announcement either before this year's submission deadline, or waited to make the change until after this year's awards.

Otherwise, their contest, their rules.

It seems like they made the announcement kinda close to the submission period, but not actually after--subs open today. So it doesn't disqualify anyone who's subbed, but it does dash the hopes of some folks who were planning on it. I can understand why people would be bummed but not the sense of entitlement that some seem to have.
