Potatoes actually come in a wide variety of colors:

Except when they don't:

Comparison inspired by this, via [profile] james_nicoll  and [livejournal.com profile] ktempest .  Scroll down to Paul Di Filippo's comment in which he discusses potatoes and corn and Sonic Youth.

Halfway down the discussion thread...

Disappointed in Di Fillipo's response. Sigh. This happens EVERY year. (Well, not Di Fillipo, but the anthology or the short list or whatever, and people go, "Hmmmm, why all the white guys?" and other people split hairs and go into crazy contortions to try and justify the homogenity of the authors.)

Also, your second set of potatoes looks like Klan potatoes.

Oh my, that's a lot of fail. I don't even know where to begin. Maybe it's best just to stick with the potatoes.

No, I have no resistance. Female writers can't complain about anthologies with no women, because it looks like they're just jealous? Only contacting men for your invite-only anthology isn't sexist? Noticing an all-male TOC is equivalent to instituting a census-and-quota system? WTF?

Yeah, I love that - "You're just saying there should be a Tiptree story because you're mad YOU didn't get a story in the anthology."

Mind-boggling.

That's why the white potatoes caught my eye...apparently they're really ghost potatoes though. For halloween, presumably.

The actual editor of the anthology posted a response someplace that was less defensive than Di Fillipo's, but went with the usual "girls write about kittens, boys write about rocketships" logic. (he didn't put it quite that way, but that's the essence)

Yeah, I keep looking for the kittens in James Tiptree's work. It's like those Where's Waldo books....you know it's just gotta be in there somewhere.
