Not really Wisconsin-related but an awesome song. And appropriate to other things going on in the country.

Whee, music meme!  I got it from [livejournal.com profile] pnkrokhockeymom

1. If you'd like to play along, reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. You then list (and upload or link to the video, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Then, as I'm doing here, you'll post the list to your journal with the instructions. Easy peasy!

My letter is "M."

1.  "Malo" by Bebe.  No embedding available for this video, sorry, but here's a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBu5l8W8SCk

2. "Michael" by Franz Ferdinand

3. "Motownphilly" by Boyz To Men

4.  "Meds" by Placebo.  Another one with no embedding, frack! What is up with that? Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eh0rAUwZSQ

5. "Mad World" as covered by Gary Jules (original, by Tears for Fears, is also awesome).  The video is both twee and boring, but the song is beautiful and some of the comments are amusing.  My favorite: "if I get run over by a truck or I start to die I will think of this song."

This is the song they play when the Blackhawks score, or have a parade, or what have you.  It will never, ever, ever stop being stuck in my head after the past few days.  Fortunately it's a good song.  Also the video is full of pretty burlesque girls, so +1 for those of us who like that sort of thing. Cut in case burlesque girls are not your thing )

Here, have some Bread and Roses:

As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: Bread and Roses! Bread and Roses!

As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses.

As we go marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too.

As we go marching, marching, we bring the greater days,
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses, bread and roses.

My Ipod is hiding somewhere, so I've been listening to CDs in the car this week, which means in most cases listening to older stuff. This morning I decided to give some old Billy Joel a whirl, and had Glass Houses in the player.

The song You May Be Right, I May Be Crazy features the following "crazy" behavior:

- Crashing a party
- Walking through Bedford-Stuy alone
- Riding a motorcycle in the rain
- Telling dirty jokes

That's the entirety of his "lunacy." Ah, the good old days.

The "Literal Video Version" of  "Total Eclipse of the Heart" *

*Tori Amos did an awesome cover of this on one of her bootleg albums, by the way.

Charlie likes me to sing to him, which is fun, particularly because I haven't learned any proper lullabies to sing to him.  That means I get to sing things that are full of blood, death, and/or values I don't actually want him to learn.  Right now these songs are in rotation:

Lonesome Valley
Wayfaring Stranger
Roddy McCorley
Dark as a Dungeon
Blood On The Saddle
Bonny Charlie
Sound the Pibroch

He loves to hear this stuff and it makes him go right to sleep after a song or two.   The other day I played some Pentangle for him in Itunes and he cracked a big smile.

I like this kid.

Everyone else posts their favorite youtubery in their blogs, so I'm going to jump on the bandwagon! However, I don't like coy linkage so I'm going to be all crazy and actually tell you what this video is before you click it.

This is Kate Bush and David Gilmour doing "Running Up That Hill" live. The synth parts from the album track are done here by Gilmour on guitar. Joy.

This weekend feels like a life-altering experience for me - I've been struggling to find balance in my life between my career and my various creative pursuits. I love my career. But I didn't realize how little I loved my various creative pursuits--drawing, 3d graphics, craftsy stuff--until this weekend, when I've fallen so deeply in love with my own writing process again. Fiction writing is the thing that's been missing, and I think it can balance out my internal see-saw if I set it in the place that's been occupied by those weaker pursuits, opposite my career.

The Engine Driver - The Decemberists
Say Goodbye - Dave Matthews
Everything Had Changed - BNL
New Soul - Yael Naim
Bouncing Around the Room - Phish
Sleeps With Butterflies - Tori Amos
Long Line of Cars - Cake
Seek Up - Dave Matthews
Not the Same - Ben Folds
Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp
Road Trippin' - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Hey Pretty (Drive-By) - Poe
Goin Down the Road Feelin Bad - the Dead
I Want to Break Free - Queen
Until You Came Along - Golden Smog
Learn to Live with What You Are - Ben Folds
Better Version of Me - Fiona Apple
Slow Burn - David Bowie
